Why We Chose the BMW R 1300 GSA for Our Round-the-World Journey
When it came time to choose the motorcycle that would carry us around the world, we knew it wasn't a decision to make lightly. We tested, we researched, we debated. After months of deliberation and real-world riding, we finally chose the BMW R 1300 GSA. And while you truly can ride any bike around the world (and we wholeheartedly believe that the most important thing is simply getting out there), for us, the R 1300 GSA became a vital part of our story.
First, let's talk about the bike itself. The 2024 BMW R 1300 GS Adventure (GSA) is built around BMW's new 1300cc boxer twin engine, producing 145 hp and 149 Nm of torque. It weighs 269 kg wet, yet it still offers legendary long-distance comfort, rugged off-road capability, and now even sharper technology like the 10.25" TFT display and advanced adaptive suspension.
We also considered other bikes seriously. We tested the Yamaha Ténéré 700 — brilliantly simple and light, but we knew the long stretches of road we were planning to cover would punish us without a bit more wind protection and comfort. The Honda Africa Twin impressed us with its reliability and ergonomics but having got used to the power delivery and low maintainance of the shaft drive and the weight sitting so low on the boxer engine it didnt feel right for us. Ducati’s DesertX had amazing off-road abilities, but the servicing costs made us wary for a two-year trip across remote regions. We even tried the Ducati Multistrada V4 Rally — a technological marvel, fast and comfortable — but the complexity and cost of maintenance outside Europe concerned us.
Every bike has compromises. What set the R 1300 GSA apart for us was not that it was "perfect" — it's heavy, undeniably. But it’s heavy for a reason. It's heavy because it carries a colossal 30-liter fuel tank, industrial-grade crash protection, integrated electronics that make rough terrain manageable, and build quality proven over decades in the toughest environments. And yes, I can lift it when needed.
Another huge factor was the amount of luggage we need to carry. We’re two-up touring, and that means a lot of gear: camping equipment, photography and video kit, riding and casual clothes, tools, spare parts — the list goes on. The R 1300 GSA’s carrying capacity, both in terms of physical space and weight handling, is unmatched. Lesser bikes struggled when loaded up; the GSA feels like it’s just getting started. With it’s maximum payload of 272kg the R1300 GSA is desinged to take two people and luggage long distances without risking overloading the frame or overworking the engine, even two up and fully loaded we will be way below the maximum payload.
Experience also played a big role. We did over 40,000 kilometers in 18 months on our previous R 1250 GSA without a single mechanical issue. That’s trust you earn the hard way. When we rode the new R 1300 GS, we loved the improvements — the more agile handling, the lighter feel, the even smoother power delivery. But we knew for the expedition we’re planning, the added range, ruggedness, and luggage capability of the Adventure model made it the obvious choice.
One of the standout decisions we made was opting for the Enduro Pro package. This choice wasn't just about enhancing off-road capabilities; it was a strategic move to prioritize durability. Notably, this package removes the integrated turn signals from the handguards, a feature present in the standard setup. By eliminating these, we significantly reduce the risk of damage during inevitable drops or when navigating through tight trails. This design choice ensures that our indicators remain intact and functional, even in challenging conditions.
Another compelling reason for our choice is how adventure-ready the R 1300 GSA is straight from the factory. Unlike other bikes that necessitate immediate upgrades—be it suspension enhancements or luggage solutions—the GSA comes equipped with features that meet our demanding requirements. Its robust suspension handles varied terrains effortlessly, and the integrated luggage system offers ample storage for our gear. While we plan to add additional rear lighting for enhanced visibility and a few other minor tweaks, these are preferences rather than necessities. The bike's comprehensive standard setup means we can embark on our journey with confidence, knowing it's built to handle the rigors of global exploration without the need for extensive modifications.
We’re also incredibly proud to be working with BMW Motorrad as part of this journey. Having their support on this adventure adds an extra layer of confidence, knowing that the brand we trust is right there with us as we take on the world.
In the end, it came down to the simple feeling we got every time we swung a leg over the GSA. This wasn't just a machine. It was a partner. When you're planning something as big as a round-the-world trip, you want to be excited every single morning when you pack up and ride away. We wanted our bike to feel like home, to be part of our adventure, not just transport through it.
We could have done it on anything. And if you're reading this and dreaming, let me say: You can too. But for us, choosing the BMW R 1300 GSA was like inviting an old friend along for the journey — a friend who has already proven they can take us anywhere.
We can't wait to see where it takes us next.
